Coartem 20/120mg Tablets are prescribed for acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. The combination of artemether and lumefantrine works quickly to reduce parasites in the bloodstream, providing relief from symptoms and reducing the risk of transmission. Artemether is derived from the sweet wormwood plant, while lumefantrine complements its action and prevents recurrence of the infection.

The dosage of Coartem is determined based on the patient’s age and body weight. Typically, it is given in a 6-dose regimen spread over a 3-day period. For adults and children weighing ≥35 kg, the recommended dose is four tablets per dose, taken at specific intervals: immediately upon diagnosis, then 8 hours later, followed by doses at 24, 36, 48, and 60 hours after the initial dose. Children weighing 25-34 kg should take three tablets per dose, following the same schedule. For children weighing 15-24 kg, the dose is two tablets per dose, following the same schedule. Lastly, children weighing 5-14 kg should take one tablet per dose, following the same schedule.

Patients who have allergies to artemether, lumefantrine, or any other Coartem component should avoid using this medication. Coartem is not recommended for treating severe or complicated malaria. In such cases, hospital treatment with intravenous antimalarials is necessary. Patients with existing heart conditions or those taking medications that prolong the QT interval should use Coartem cautiously due to the risk of QT interval prolongation. It is important for patients to disclose all medications they are taking, as Coartem can interact with various drugs such as antiretroviral, antibiotics, and anticonvulsants. The use of Coartem during the first trimester of pregnancy is not advised unless there are no other options available. Additionally, caution should be exercised when using Coartem while breastfeeding. Patients with liver or kidney issues should use Coartem carefully and under medical supervision. Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, weakness, fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Serious side effects may include signs of an allergic reaction, irregular heartbeat, severe headache, vision changes, confusion, or seizures.
