Coartem 80mg/480mg Tablets is a combination medication used primarily for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It’s effective in areas where malaria parasites have developed resistance to other treatments. Active Substances: Artemether: 80mg and Lumefantrine: 480mg.

Suggested Use
Coartem is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections in patients weighing at least 5 kg. It is effective in geographical regions where resistance to chloroquine has been reported.
Dosage:
Adults and children weighing 35kg or more:
- Take one tablet (80mg/480mg) twice daily for 3 consecutive days (total of 6 tablets).
- Tablets should be taken with food or a milk-based drink to enhance absorption.
For children under 35kg, refer to the weight-specific dosing of Coartem 20mg/120mg.
Warning
- This medication is not suitable for severe malaria or patients requiring parenteral therapy.
- Avoid use if allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any excipients in the formulation.
- Drug Interactions:
- Avoid concurrent use with drugs that prolong the QT interval (e.g., some antibiotics, antifungals).
- Use with caution alongside medications metabolized by CYP3A4.
- Pregnancy:
- Use in the first trimester only if no safer alternative exists.
- Generally considered safe in the second and third trimesters under medical supervision.
- Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare professional before use.
- Common side effects include headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Severe reactions are rare but may include heart rhythm disturbances.
Important Notes:
- Always complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve.
- In case of vomiting within 1 hour of taking the tablet, a replacement dose is recommended.
- Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen after completing treatment.
