Engerix B is a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine used to prevent infection caused by all known subtypes of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It helps your body develop immunity to the virus. Active Substances: Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) (Recombinant DNA technology)

Suggested Use

Engerix B is primarily used for:

  • Immunization against hepatitis B virus infection in adults aged 20 years and older.
  • It is part of a vaccination schedule recommended for individuals at risk of hepatitis B exposure, including healthcare workers and those with certain medical conditions.

Dosage:

For adults (20 years and older):

  • Initial Series: Three doses of 1 mL each, administered intramuscularly at:
    • 0 months
    • 1 month
    • 6 months

For adults on hemodialysis:

  • A series of four doses, with the first two doses given at 0 and 1 month, followed by additional doses at 2 and 6 months, each dose being 2 mL.

Warning

  1. Contraindications:
    • Hypersensitivity to the active substance, any excipients, or yeast (used during production).
    • Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of hepatitis B vaccine.
  2. Precautions:
    • Vaccination should be postponed in individuals with acute severe febrile illness.
    • Patients with bleeding disorders or those on anticoagulant therapy should be vaccinated with caution due to the risk of haematoma.
    • Limited efficacy in individuals with a compromised immune system (e.g., HIV-positive or undergoing immunosuppressive therapy).
  3. Side Effects:
    • Common: Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; mild fever; fatigue.
    • Rare: Hypersensitivity reactions, such as rash, anaphylaxis, or angioedema.
  4. Special Populations:
    • Pregnant and breastfeeding women: Use only if clearly needed and after consultation with a healthcare provider.
  5. Storage:
    • Store in a refrigerator at 2 °C to 8 °C. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
