Epanutin Ssol 250mg/5ml is used to treat and prevent seizures. It contains phenytoin, which helps stabilize nerve cells, lower seizure activity, and manage unusual electrical signals in the brain. Active Ingredient: Phenytoin (250 mg in 5 ml).

Suggested Use
Epanutin Ssol 250mg/5ml is used in the:
- Treatment and prevention of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures
- Management of partial seizures
- May also be used in the treatment of status epilepticus (continuous seizure activity) when administered intravenously (in a medical setting)
- Sometimes used to manage trigeminal neuralgia, a type of nerve pain, in cases where other treatments are ineffective
Dosage:
- Adults: Typically, a starting dose of 5 mg/kg/day in divided doses, is adjusted according to blood levels and clinical response. Maintenance doses vary but often range from 300-400 mg/day in divided doses.
- Children: The initial dose is usually between 5-10 mg/kg/day in divided doses, adjusted based on therapeutic response.
- Elderly: Dosage should be cautiously adjusted and monitored, as this population may have a slower rate of phenytoin metabolism.
Warning
- Avoid if allergic to phenytoin or any of its ingredients.
- Phenytoin may cause blood disorders like leukopenia or thrombocytopenia, and regular blood tests are recommended.
- Monitor liver function closely as phenytoin may lead to liver damage, especially in patients with pre-existing liver issues.
- Antiepileptic drugs may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Patients should be monitored for changes in mood or behaviour.
- Phenytoin has many potential interactions with other medications, including those that induce or inhibit liver enzymes.
- Phenytoin is known to cause fetal harm; pregnant women should use it only if needed and under close medical supervision.
- Due to the possibility of dizziness or drowsiness, patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until they know how phenytoin affects them.
- Do not stop phenytoin abruptly as it may cause withdrawal seizures.
