Coartem 20mg/120mg Tablets are a combination medication used primarily for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. This formulation is particularly effective in areas where malaria is resistant to other treatments. Active Substances: Artemether 20 mg and Lumefantrine120 mg per tablet.

Suggested Use

Coartem is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum.
  • Mixed infections including P. falciparum.
  • Stand-by emergency treatment for adults, children, and infants weighing 5 kg or more.

 

Dosage:

  • Adults and children weighing 35 kg or more:
    • Day 1: 4 tablets at diagnosis, 4 tablets after 8 hours.
    • Days 2 & 3: 4 tablets twice daily (morning and evening).

Total: 24 tablets over 3 days.

  • Infants and children weighing 5 kg to less than 35 kg:
    • Day 1: 1 tablet at diagnosis, 1 tablet after 8 hours.
    • Days 2 & 3: 1 tablet twice daily (morning and evening).

Total: 18 tablets over 3 days.

Warning

  • Do not use if you are allergic to artemether or lumefantrine.
  • Can interact with carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampin, and St. John’s wort.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • It is not known if Coartem passes into breast milk.
  • May cause prolongation of the QT interval.
