Ritalin 10 mg is indicated for:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Helps improve attention span, reduce impulsivity, and manage hyperactive behaviour.
- Narcolepsy: A sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks.
Dosage:
The dosage of Ritalin should be individualized based on the patient’s response and medical need. General dosing guidelines include:
- Children (6 years and older): Starting dose: 5 mg (half a tablet) once or twice daily.
- The dose may be increased by 5 to 10 mg weekly as needed, with a maximum of 60 mg (6 tablets) per day.
- Adults: Dosage should be individualized based on the patient’s response. Typically, the starting dose is 10 mg twice daily.
Administration: Ritalin can be taken with or without food, preferably with a full glass of water. If gastrointestinal upset occurs, taking it with food may help. Take doses at least 1 to 2 hours before the desired effect is needed.
Warning
- Addiction Risk: Ritalin may be habit-forming. Inform your doctor if you have a history of drug or alcohol addiction.
- Heart Problems: Stimulants have caused stroke, heart attack, and sudden death in people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or a heart defect.
- Psychiatric Problems: Ritalin may cause new or worsening psychosis, especially if you have a history of depression, mental illness, or bipolar disorder.
- Blood Circulation Problems: May cause numbness, pain, or discolouration in fingers or toes.
- Interactions: Do not use Ritalin if you have used an MAO inhibitor within the past 14 days.
