Eltroxin is prescribed primarily for:
- Hypothyroidism: Treating underactive thyroid gland conditions, which can cause fatigue, weight gain, and sensitivity to cold.
- Thyroid hormone suppression: In some cases, it is also used to manage thyroid-related disorders, such as goitre or thyroid cancer, by decreasing thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels.
Dosage is based on age, body weight, and individual response and should be determined by a physician. Take orally once daily on an empty stomach, ideally 30 minutes to an hour before breakfast, with a full glass of water.
Warning
- Always follow your doctor’s prescription and have regular monitoring to adjust dosage as needed.
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Doses may need adjustment during pregnancy; consult your doctor for guidance.
- Patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, or elderly patients should use Eltroxin with caution and may require lower initial doses.
- Avoid taking Eltroxin within 4 hours of certain medications or supplements, including calcium, iron, or antacids, as they can interfere with absorption.
- Taking more than the prescribed amount may lead to symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and tremors.
