Coartesiane Susp is an oral suspension used for the treatment of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It contains a combination of two active substances which work together to rapidly kill the malaria parasites. Active Substances: Artemether: 3 mg/ml and Lumefantrine: 18 mg/ml

Suggested Use

Coartesiane Suspension is indicated for:

  • Treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum, including drug-resistant strains.

This medication is not intended for the prevention of malaria or for the treatment of severe malaria (e.g., cerebral malaria).


Dosage:

Dosage depends on the child’s body weight. The medication is typically administered in six doses over three days.

Recommended Dosing Schedule:

  1. Initial Dose: Administer immediately after malaria diagnosis.
  2. Second Dose: 8 hours after the first dose.
  3. Subsequent Doses: Administer 1 dose every 12 hours for the next 2 days (total of 6 doses).
  • The exact volume of the suspension per dose will depend on the child’s weight and should be determined by a healthcare provider.
  • Shake the bottle well before administering the medication.

Warning

  1. Do not use in patients allergic to artemisinin derivatives, lumefantrine, or any excipients in the suspension.
  2. Not suitable for severe malaria cases requiring parenteral treatment.
  3. May cause QT prolongation; avoid use with other drugs that prolong the QT interval.
  4. Exercise caution in patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction.
  5. Avoid concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin or antiepileptic drugs, as they may reduce efficacy.
  6. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. Seek medical attention for severe adverse reactions.

Storage:

  • Store at a temperature below 30°C, away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Additional Advice:

  • Administer the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to avoid drug resistance.
  • If vomiting occurs within 1 hour of dosing, administer an additional dose.
  • Always follow the healthcare provider’s instructions for proper use.
