Malanil Adult is an antimalarial medication primarily used for the prevention and treatment of malaria in adults. Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Malanil Adult contains a combination of two active substances, Atovaquone 250 mg and Proguanil Hydrochloride 100 mg per tablet, that work together to effectively prevent and treat malaria caused by the Plasmodium parasite.
Anti-Malarials
Suggested Use
Malanil Adult is indicated for:
- Prophylaxis of Plasmodium falciparum malaria: It is especially recommended in areas where the pathogen may be resistant to other antimalarials.
- Treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria: Effective against drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains.
Dosage:
- Prophylaxis: Take one tablet (250 mg atovaquone / 100 mg proguanil) orally once daily, starting 1-2 days before entering a malaria-endemic area and continuing until 7 days after leaving the area.
- Treatment: Take four tablets (1 g atovaquone / 400 mg proguanil) orally once daily for 3 days.
Administration: Take the tablet with food or a milky drink at the same time each day. If vomiting occurs within one hour of dosing, a repeat dose should be taken.
Warning
- Hypersensitivity: Avoid use if allergic to Atovaquone, Proguanil, or any excipients in the tablet.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk; consult a healthcare professional.
- Renal Impairment: Not recommended for individuals with severe kidney issues (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min).
- Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution in individuals with liver problems.
- Gastrointestinal Disturbances: May cause nausea or diarrhoea; ensure proper hydration.
- Dizziness and Fatigue: May occur; caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor if taking warfarin, rifampin, tetracyclines, or antacids.
