Suggested Use
Lantus is indicated for the treatment of:
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus in adults and children aged 6 years and above.
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults who require long-acting insulin for blood sugar control.
It works by mimicking natural insulin to regulate blood glucose levels throughout the day.
Dosage:
- Adults and Adolescents: The dose should be individually adjusted based on the patient’s needs. Typically, it is administered once daily at the same time each day.
- Children (aged 2 years and older): The dose should also be individually adjusted.
- Special Populations: Dosage adjustments may be required for elderly patients, those with renal or hepatic impairment.
Warning
- Hypoglycaemia: The most common adverse effect. Monitor blood sugar levels regularly.
- Rarely, allergic reactions may occur. Symptoms include rash, itching, or difficulty breathing. Seek medical attention if these occur.
- Store unopened vials in a refrigerator (2 °C–8 °C). Do not freeze. After opening, vials can be stored at room temperature (below 25 °C) and used within 28 days.
- Rotate injection sites to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy (changes in fat tissue).
- Certain medications (e.g., beta-blockers, corticosteroids) may affect blood sugar levels. Consult a healthcare provider before starting new medications.
- Use with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and consult a doctor for dose adjustments.
- Overdosing may lead to severe hypoglycaemia, requiring immediate treatment with glucose or glucagon.
