Epilim Syrup 300ml is prescribed to manage and treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder in both adults and children. This pleasant-tasting syrup ensures ease of administration, especially for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets. Active Substance:Sodium Valproate: 200mg per 5ml of syrup.

Epilim Syrup is indicated for:

  1. Epilepsy: It is used to manage various types of seizures in adults and children.
  2. Bipolar Disorder: It can be prescribed for the treatment of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder

Dosage:

The dosage of Epilim Syrup should be determined by a healthcare professional based on the patient’s condition and response to treatment. Generally, the recommended starting dose for adults may vary, but it often begins with:

  • Adults: Typically, the initial dose can range from 10 to 15 mg/kg/day, adjusted as necessary.
  • Children: The dosage is usually calculated based on weight and may start around 10 mg/kg/day.

It is crucial to follow the prescribing physician’s instructions regarding dosage adjustments and frequency of administration

 

Warning

  1. Contraindications:
    • Known hypersensitivity to sodium valproate or its excipients.
    • Liver dysfunction or significant hepatic impairment.
    • History of urea cycle disorders.
    • Pregnant women unless absolutely necessary, due to the high risk of fetal malformations and developmental disorders.
  2. Liver Monitoring:
    • Regular liver function tests are required, especially during the first 6 months of treatment.
    • Discontinue immediately if signs of hepatic dysfunction appear (e.g., jaundice, abdominal pain, vomiting).
  3. Pregnancy and Lactation:
    • Not recommended during pregnancy unless no safer alternatives exist.
    • Sodium valproate is excreted in breast milk; consult a doctor for risk assessment.
  4. Pancreatitis:
    • Rare cases of life-threatening pancreatitis have been reported; discontinue if symptoms occur.
  5. Neurological Effects:
    • May cause drowsiness, dizziness, or impaired coordination; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if affected.
  6. Other Considerations:
    • Monitor for signs of suicidal ideation or behaviour.
    • Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent withdrawal seizures.
    • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or systemic lupus erythematosus.
