Suggested Use
Allopurinol 100mg Tablets are indicated for:
- Treatment of gout and prevention of gouty arthritis.
- Management of hyperuricemia associated with chronic gout.
- Prevention of uric acid and calcium oxalate kidney stones.
- Reduction of uric acid levels in conditions such as:
- Tumor lysis syndrome in cancer treatment.
- Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.
Dosage:
Adults:
- Starting dose: 100mg once daily, gradually increased based on uric acid levels and response.
- Maintenance dose: 100–300mg daily, divided into doses if necessary.
Elderly:
- Start at the lower end of the dose range, adjusting carefully based on kidney function and response.
Children (under 15 years):
- 10–20mg/kg/day, divided into doses (maximum daily dose: 400mg). Primarily used for secondary hyperuricemia (e.g., in cancer treatment).
Special Considerations:
- Patients with kidney or liver impairment may require lower doses and close monitoring.
- Take with or after meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Warning
- Serious allergic reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson Syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis) can occur. Stop taking the medication immediately if you notice a rash or other signs of hypersensitivity.
- Regularly monitor your kidney function. Your doctor may adjust your dose if you have kidney impairment.
- Drink plenty of water to lower the risk of kidney stones and uric acid crystal formation.
- Avoid using azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline without dose adjustments, as these combinations may lead to toxicity.
- Using amoxicillin or ampicillin increases the risk of developing a rash.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Only use this medication if the benefits outweigh the risks. Always consult your doctor first.
- You might experience temporary gout flares when starting treatment. Your doctor may prescribe colchicine or NSAIDs to manage these flares.
- The medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel affected.
- Common Side Effects:
- Skin rash or itching.
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
- Drowsiness or dizziness.
- Rare but Serious Side Effects:
