Warning
- Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis, a serious condition due to lactic acid buildup. This risk is higher in people with kidney problems, liver disease, or uncontrolled diabetes. Symptoms include unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, and severe weakness.
- Regular monitoring of kidney function is advised, as poor kidney function increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Limit or avoid alcohol intake as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and impact blood sugar control.
- Discontinue Glucophage XR temporarily before major surgery or any medical imaging that involves iodinated contrast, as this can affect kidney function.
- Hypoglycemia Risk: Though metformin alone doesn’t typically cause low blood sugar, combining it with other diabetes medications or insulin can increase this risk.
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, and metallic taste.
