Altacef 500mg Tablets, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, is effective against a broad range of bacterial infections and is designed for oral administration. Active Substances Cefuroxime Axetil 500mg per tablet.

Suggested Use

Altacef (Cefuroxime) 500mg Tablets are indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:

  1. Respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia).
  2. Sinusitis and otitis media (middle ear infections).
  3. Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis).
  4. Skin and soft tissue infections.
  5. Lyme disease in its early stages.
  6. Throat infections (e.g., tonsillitis, pharyngitis).
Dosage

Adults and Adolescents (≥12 years):

  • The usual dose is 500mg twice daily for most infections.
  • For Lyme disease, the dose may be 500mg twice daily for 20 days.

Children (≥3 months):

  • The dosage is typically based on body weight (standard dose: 10-15mg/kg twice daily). Consult a doctor for specific recommendations.

Important Instructions:

  • Take the tablets after food to enhance absorption.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew.

Warning

  • Allergic Reactions:
    • Avoid if allergic to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins (risk of cross-sensitivity).
    • Discontinue and seek immediate medical help if symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing occur.
  • Gastrointestinal Conditions:
    • Use with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
    • Diarrhoea may occur; inform your doctor if it is severe or persistent.
  • Renal Impairment:
    • Dose adjustment may be necessary for patients with kidney issues.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
    • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and under medical supervision.
    • Cefuroxime passes into breast milk; consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Probenecid and diuretics (e.g., furosemide) may enhance cefuroxime levels.
    • Antacids or proton pump inhibitors may reduce absorption of cefuroxime.
  • Side Effects:
    • Common: Nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache.
    • Rare but severe: Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea, severe allergic reactions.
