Lipitor is used to:
- Lower levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood.
- Increase levels of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL) in the blood.
- Reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart-related complications in people with or at risk of heart disease.
Dosage
- The typical starting dose for adults is 10 to 20 mg once daily.
- For patients requiring a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol (greater than 45%), the starting dose may be 40 mg once daily.
- The dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily, depending on the patient’s condition and response to treatment.
Warning
- Do not use Lipitor if you have active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes.
- Lipitor can cause muscle problems, including muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, which can lead to serious conditions like rhabdomyolysis.
- Lipitor should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, as Lipitor can interact with certain drugs.
- Limit alcoholic beverages while taking Lipitor, as alcohol can increase the risk of liver problems.
