Suggested Use
Flucloxacillin is commonly prescribed for:
- Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., abscesses, cellulitis)
- Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia)
- Bone and joint infections (e.g., osteomyelitis)
- Endocarditis
- Other infections caused by penicillin-sensitive organisms, particularly those resistant to standard penicillins.
Adults and Children over 10 years: The usual dose is 250mg to 500mg taken four times a day, depending on the severity of the infection.
Children (under 10 years): Dosage is typically adjusted based on the child’s weight, commonly 125mg to 250mg taken four times a day.
The length of treatment varies by the type and severity of the infection but is generally continued for at least 5 to 10 days
Warning
- Patients with a known allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics should avoid flucloxacillin. Anaphylactic reactions may occur.
- Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, as flucloxacillin can affect liver function tests. Monitor liver function regularly during prolonged therapy.
- Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
- May cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. If severe diarrhoea occurs, consult a healthcare professional.
- Inform the physician about all medications being taken, as flucloxacillin may interact with certain drugs, such as methotrexate and anticoagulants.
