Local Anesthetics

Suggested Use

Emla Cream is used to numb the skin surface temporarily. It helps reduce pain from:

  1. Minor skin procedures, such as needle insertions or minor surgeries
  2. Tattooing or tattoo removal
  3. Piercing
  4. Vaccinations or other injections
  5. Minor skin procedures involving lasers or skin grafts

Dosage and Application:

  • Adults and Adolescents (over 12 years): Apply a thick layer of Emla Cream to the desired area, covering it with an occlusive dressing (plastic wrap or similar) for 1-2 hours before the procedure.
  • Children (3-11 years): A thin layer of cream is generally used, with the application time depending on the child’s age and procedure, typically between 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Infants (0-2 years): Consult a healthcare provider before applying, as dosage and timing need adjustment for safety.

After the specified time, remove the occlusive dressing and wipe off any remaining cream before proceeding with the medical procedure.

Warning

  • Do not use Emla if allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, or other local anaesthetics.
  • Avoid using on open wounds, mucous membranes, or areas of severe dermatitis unless advised by a doctor.
  • Emla can increase the risk of methemoglobinemia, especially in infants and young children or those with predisposing conditions. Always consult a healthcare provider before use in children.
  • Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you are using other local anaesthetics or certain heart medications, as these may interact with Emla Cream.
  • Some common side effects include temporary redness, mild swelling, tingling, or mild burning at the application site.
  • Rarely, users may experience allergic reactions, prolonged numbness, or skin irritation. If any severe reaction occurs, seek medical help promptly.

Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, and keep out of reach of children.
