Suggested Use
- Epilepsy: Lamictal is used to treat partial-onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in both adults and children.
- Bipolar Disorder: It is also used to delay mood episodes in adults with bipolar disorder.
Dosage:
- Epilepsy: The dosage varies based on age, weight, and whether Lamictal is used alone or with other medications. Initial doses are typically low and gradually increased to minimize the risk of side effects.
- Bipolar Disorder: The dosage for bipolar disorder also starts low and is gradually increased. The exact dosage depends on individual patient needs and response to treatment.
Warning
- Lamictal can cause severe, potentially life-threatening skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. The risk is higher in children and those taking high initial doses or valproic acid.
- Some people may experience depression or suicidal thoughts while taking Lamictal. Regular monitoring by a healthcare provider is essential.
- Taking Lamictal during early pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects such as cleft lip or palate.
- Do not take Lamictal if you are allergic to lamotrigine.
