Suggested Use
Avodart is indicated for:
- Treatment of moderate to severe symptoms of BPH.
- Reduction in the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR).
- Decreasing the necessity for surgery related to BPH.
- It can be used alone or in combination with the alpha-blocker tamsulosin (0.4 mg) to enhance efficacy in managing BPH symptoms
Dosage:
The recommended dosage for adults is:
- One capsule (0.5 mg) taken orally once daily.
- Capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed or opened, as this may irritate the mouth or throat. Avodart can be taken with or without food.
Improvement in symptoms may be observed within 3 months, but it can take up to 6 months to assess the full benefit of treatment.
Warning
- Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to dutasteride or any of its components.
- Women, children, or adolescents should not use this medication.
- Pregnancy Warning:
- Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may harm a male fetus. Pregnant women or those planning pregnancy should avoid handling the capsules.
- Side Effects:
- Common: Impotence, decreased libido, ejaculation disorders, and breast tenderness/enlargement.
- Rare: Allergic reactions, hair loss, or excessive hair growth.
- Drug Interactions:
- Inform your doctor about other medications, especially blood thinners (e.g., warfarin) and antifungal medications.
- Monitoring:
- Regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing is advised, as dutasteride may affect PSA levels.
