Amikacin is used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible strains of Gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains). It is indicated for infections such as:
- Bacteremia and septicemia
- Neonatal sepsis
- Respiratory tract infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Central nervous system infections
- Skin and skin structure infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Post-operative infections
- Complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections
Dosage
The dosage of Amikacin varies based on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient’s renal function. It is crucial to monitor serum concentrations to avoid potentially toxic levels. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired renal function.
Warning
- Ototoxicity and Nephrotoxicity: Patients should be closely monitored for signs of ototoxicity (hearing loss, vertigo) and nephrotoxicity (renal dysfunction).
- Neurotoxicity: Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, muscle twitching, and convulsions.
- Neuromuscular Blockade: There is a risk of neuromuscular blockade and respiratory paralysis, especially when used with certain anaesthetics or neuromuscular blocking agents.
- Allergic Reactions: Hypersensitivity reactions may occur.
